NCR teams dominate 23rd UNIGAMES

The NCR Manila teams lead in five events while CHAMPIONSHIP matches are held today at various sports venues for basketball, volleyball, football and beach volleyball in the 23rd University Games (UNIGAMES) hosted anew by Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental.

DUMAGUETE CITY – As expected teams from the National Capital Region dominated the five events in the 23rd edition of the University Games (UNIGAMES) hosted by Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental.

NCR teams have large and diverse pools of players to choose from and are usually mentored by national coaches and trainers with rich experience from international tournaments.
However, it should also be underscored that the main purpose of the UNIGAMES is in fact to bring teams that usually compete in the high profile University Athletic Association of the Philippines

and the National Collegiate Athletic Association to the countryside for matches with schools from Visayas and Mindanao.

As of press time, since many of the championship games will be held today, most of those on top of the rankings and will feature in the final matches of basketball, volleyball, football and beach volleyball are teams based in NCR or Luzon with some strong teams from Visayas and Mindanao recording significant victories.

In basketball, with 21 teams in competitions, three NCR schools hine namely National University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Rizal Technological University of the Philippines and Rizal Techological University while University of Mindanao-Davao, University of Saint La Salle of Negros Occidental and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos also performed well.

In volleyball, with maximum of 24 schools competing, showed the supremacy of the University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle – college of St. Benilde, Ateneo De Manila University, National University, PUP and University of the East. Nevertheless, the University of Mindanao-Davao and USLS-Bacolod also recorded respectable wins.

Four teams are in teh running for top honors in football held in Perdices Coliseum, they are the University of the Philippines, Dilliman, De La Salle – College of St. Benilde, National University and USLS-Bacolod.

Negros Oriental State University and University of Perpetual Help end a scoreless 90-minute match at Perdices Coliseum.

PUP, UST and University of the East are battling for dominance in athletics with La Carlota City College, Leyte Normal University of San Jose Recoletos as the only schools outside of NCR which sent teams.

Finally, in beach volleyball, the University of Santo Tomas, University of Perpetual Help Dalta, PUP, Rizal Technological University are expected to emerge on top.
