Big-time carnappers steal 5 cars in 1 day

DUMAGUETE CITY – A syndicate of big time carnappers locally known as “RENTANGAY” have operated in Dumaguete on a one-time-big-time basis and brought along with them at least five vehicles, two of them are brand new. Police found out they were brought to Mindanao, but still at large.

National Bureau of Investigation Special Invesgator (SI) Ma. Contesa Lastimoso disclosed that four rent-a-car operators from Valencia, Bacong and Dumaguete had sought the help of NBI Dumaguete after renters of their respective vehicles had failed to return the units within the days stipulated in the contracts, only to find out later that they have been victims of carnapping by RENTANGAY gang , a modus operandi used by a lady suspect who was arrested in Manila few days ago.

The victims included Just Ride rent-a-car in Valencia operated by a certain Caroline Otod with one Mitsubishi Montero colored brown, Scuds Car rental of Dumaguete City owned by Michael Andres with one Toyota Avanza, another victim is a rent-a-car business located in Aldea Homes Subdivision in Cangmating, Sibulan with two brand new 2018 model cars, namely, a Toyota Wigo and a Hi Ace van, while the fourth victim is a wife of a police officer, identified as Mara Josie Somoza of Bacong who came looking for his Crosswind vehicle.

All the victims negotiated separately in just two days between July 24-25, 2018 with one and the same lady who presented identification cards such as Philhealth, Tax Identification Number and a driver’s license, later found to be fake and fictitious. The name in the IDs presented is Romero Antonia Apura with residence in Basay, Negros Oriental. But when validated, no name and family name existed in that municipality.

The victims narrated, they have been tracking for their vehicles through GPS and found out to be in Mindanao particularly Davao and Dipolog, and so they sought the help of the Highway Patrol Group and the NBI in Dumaguete, the next time they checked, they cant anymore locate their vehicles or that the device may have been deactivated by the syndicate.

SI Lastimoso will file estafa charges against the suspect based on the identification card and driver’s license presented in violation of Article 315 of the revised penal code because the vehicles were rented, they have signed contracts, and the renter even paid four days advance payment of P2,600 per day with official receipts.

On the other hand, the Highway Patrol Group in Dumaguete has filed five counts of carnapping complaints against the suspect before the city prosecutors office yesterday, according to SPO2 Aurelio Bodo, intel section of HPG Dumaguete.

HPG provincial team leader PSI Silvestre Cenia enjoined rent-a-car or rent-a-motorcycle
