Fifteen drug peddlers were arrested in a 3-day anti-drugs sweep in Metro-Dumaguete last week to include the confiscation of 83 sachets of shabu granules with a total weight of 91.74 grams valued at P 623, 832.
In his report, Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office Director Col. Raul Tacaca directed several units to launch a coordinated anti-drugs operations in Bacong, Sibulan, Valencia and Dumaguete City through buy-bust operations. Most of those arrested however are categorized as street level targets.
Meanwhile, City Jail Warden Chief Insp. Jonairy Sitchon reiterated his resolve to purge the detention facility of illegal drugs trade by transferring most of the nearly 250 convicts, many in drug related cases, to the National Bilibid Prison.
In a recent City Peace and Order Council meeting, Sitchon stressed that transferring the convicts would not only decongest the jail but also significantly minimize the trade or use of illegal drugs.
Unfortunately, transferring the convicts to the National Bilibid Prison would entail huge costs. Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo has provided P 200, 000 but the budget has already been utilized. However, about 55 of the convicts, have been moved to Muntinlupa.
