Joint elements from the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office Intelligence Division and the Sta. Catalina Police searched the residence of the town’s Association of Barangay Councils President and ex-officio member of the Muncipal Council.
He was subsequently arrested after the seizure of a .45 caliber pistol, allegedly without the required documents legitimizing his ownership.
The PNP will charge Sta. Catalina ABC President and Barangay Captain of Caranoche Alfonso Olam for illegal possession of firearms, who is now currently detained at the town’s PNP headquarters.
NOPPO Deputy for Operations Supt. Alet Virtucio said that the search warrant was issued by Municipal Trial Court in Cities Acting Judge Rogaciano Y. Rivera following several complaints of abuses by the said ABC official.
Judge Rivera had earlier ordered the arrest of a municipal mayor for alleged sexual harassment with bail bond set at P12,000.00. This paper is withholding his name, pending the filing of his answer to the charges.
By Virtucio’s reckoning, Olam will be released if he posts P60,000 to P80,000 in bail, which can be completed next week. There were reports that at least two high-ranking officials visited Olam in jail, but Virtucio says this is natural since the detainee is a politician.
He also believes that Olam’s arrest did not mean he violated the election gun ban, considering that his firearm was not brought outside, therefore, there is no element that will aggravate his case. (by Dems Demecillo)
