Provincial Commission on Elections announced that
forty-three candidates are officially vying for the 15
provincial and congressional positions up for grabs
in the May 2013 elections in Negros Oriental.
The main battle is between the two major political parties: The administration Liberal Party under Rep. Josy Limkaichong, contesting 12 of the 15 posts, against the Nationalist People’s Coalition under Rep. George Arnaiz and economist Gary Teves, which submitted a full slate, while PDP-Laban of incumbent Governor Roel Degamo, who is presenting itself as a worthy third force contesting 8 of the 15 electoral posts.
The Comelec, headed by Election Supervisor Atty. Eddie Aba, dislclosed the following list:
For Governor, LP fielded 1st District Congresswoman Jocelyn Limkaichong as standard bearer, NPC anointed Former Finance Secretary Margarito “Gary” Teves with Degamo as PDP-Laban bet. And perennial gubernatorial candidate Samuel Torres is back. Their vice-gubernatorial tandems are Dr. Mark Macias, incumbent Apolinario ‘Jun’ Arnaiz and Dr. Henry A. Sojor, respectively.
LP fielded Atty. Manuel Iway against NPC’s Jerome Paras along with two independents, Lowell Andaya and Danilo Roble; Bais City Mayor Karen Villanueva tries to avenge her father’s 2010 loss against incumbent 2nd District Congressman George Arnaiz, a certain Raul Aninon filed as an independent. Finally, it will be a rematch for 3rd District Congressman Pryde Henry Teves and former Board Member Marcelo “Bubot” Adanza.
The candidates for the Provincial Board are as follows: 1st District (3 seats) LP re-electionists Georgita Martinez, Liland Estacion and Jessica V. Koppin; Nationalista Party members Manjuyod Mayor Amor Baldado, former La Libertad Mayor Napoleon Camero and former BM Joselito Paras, who are allied with the NPC, and a certain independent Louie Delos Santos; Second District (4 seats) LP former Land Transportation Office Chief Ely Cabanag, Elan Cadayday, Orlando Remollo and Agustin Miguel A. Perdices; NPC bets Rommel Erames, Mellimoore Saycon, Erwin Michael Macias and Mariant Escaño-Villegas; while PDP-Laban fielded Atty. Arturo Umbac, Fritzie Zanoria, Miguel Teves and Joinny D. Cahilog (a.k.a. Rex Kandos). 3rd District (3 seats): LP Telesforo Diao, Clayborne Clyde Lim and Teopisto Ray Yap; NPC Atty. Edmund F. Dy, Peve O. Ligan and Dexter Villamor; while the PDP-Laban fielded Atty. Erwin Vergara and Edith Vera.
The Commission on Elections said that the official campaign period for the local candidates begins March 29, 2013, but the agency cannot prevent the more aggressive from actually campaigning this early. Senatorial campaign period starts on February 12.
Both the Limkaichong and Teves camps, who managed to remain civil, if not cordial, despite the bruising battles ahead, publicly vowed that they will try their best to run their campaigns through decent and peaceful means.
