An angry Ernesto Reyes, the long-time city Mayor of Guihulngan,
warned looters that they will be held accountable if they continue to
defy the authorities by robbing stores of their supplies following the
6.9 magnitude earthquake, Monday.
Even women were seen
to have taken foods and
drinks from abandoned
stores and delivery trucks in
broad daylight, an indication
that government food
aid is extremely needed after
supplies are running low
and the sorry conditions of
the roads and bridges make
it extremely difficult for
traders to bring in more supplies
from the cities of Bais
and Dumaguete.
The earthquake may
have taken the lives of more
than 30 people and instilled
fear among the local populace,
but the authorities
must ensure that there is no
breakdown in law and order
even as they must race
against time to deliver all
the needed support to the
hungry, thirsty and terrorstricken
victims.
