NOWHERE (YET) TO GO
Apparently, they have nowhere else to go as of yet. Thus, defying the firm resolve of the city mayor, dozens of families, whose homes were swept away by the rampaging flood waters along the Banica River last December 17, 2011, have returned and erected modest shelters in the same spots where they almost lost their lives.
In the wake of the unprecedented calamity caused by Typhoon Sendong, Dumaguete City Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria publicly announced anew that he will initially relocate 473 families, forcibly if needed, who reside along the increasingly dangerous Banica River to safer grounds.
Concerned barangay captains were reportedly asked to find suitable temporary relocation sites within their areas of jurisdiction to accommodate the affected families while the City Government and the National Housing Authority shall complete the construction of 1,000 houses in a permanent relocation site in Banilad. |

| CRITICAL REPORTING |

by: ELY P. DEJARESCO
The provincial tourism officials got a
tongue lashing from Rep. Pryde
Henry Teves Friday night before the
members of the Negros Dive Association for
not coming up with a tourism road map for
Negros Oriental, thus our province missed at
least P100-million in tourism program funding
from the NEDA last year.
This year, still no tourism road map from the provincial tourism. This is unbelievable with all the glamorous people in that Sidlakan village neighbor of ours! Rep Teves demanded a tourism road map finished in three weeks and the good lady tourism boss obliged. Let's see. |

There is a report that, indeed,
an earth dam up somewhere
in the Apolong or Maite creeks
in Valencia, which are supposed
to be the source of water
in the Banica and Okoy rivers
plus the others in Amlan, San Jose
and Tanjay, have collapsed due to the
fury of Typhoon Sendong last December
17.
Proof of these are the massive rockslides (see photos) taken by the governor's office in response to persistent citizens' report that, indeed, a natural earth dam which used to hold voluminous rain water up there through the years, up in the mountains of Valencia, where Mt. Talinis slopes down, has or have, finally caved-in because of the pressures of the too heavy downpour of Sendong. |
