Canlaon ejects tons of gray ash,
authorities set up 24-hr watch

July 2, 1978 — The 8000 feet Canlaon Volcano dubbed by many as the “treacherous and unpredictable one” made an unannounced display of activity after it ejected tons of gray ash 1, 500 feet from its summit only to go back to its dormant state few hours later. Contrary to earlier reports, the relatively mild ash ejection did not disrupt the daily life pace in this country-like of Canlaon. There was no casualty or any evacuation.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Volcanology which has a permanent station along the volcano’s lower slopes is keeping a 24-hour watch on the behavior of the age-old volcano which has remained dormant since its last eruption in 1960 and this mild ejection. The ComVol is still flashing the red light to some 19, 000 residents along the volcano’s slopes urging them to be ready in case an eruption is eminent and evacuation is necessary.

Mass actions planned vs. NORECO II feud
July 3, 1988— Leading citizens in Dumaguete are embarking on a move to initiate mass action jointly with the provincial and city government in an effort to end, once and for all, the internal legal and administrative battle within the Noreco II management.
Gov. Emilio Macias II and City Mayor Agustin Perdices met with leading citizens in the community and lent their all-out support in calling for the dissolution of the entire Noreco II board and request NEA Administrator Rodrigo Cabrera to come over to Dumaguete and settle the issue once and for all. According to Macias and Perdices, the time has come when the situation has become intolerable. The time has therefore come for the citizens to step in so order can be restored.

Lotto is legal, but city wants public hearing for each outlet
June 29, 1998— The city government does not question the legality of lotto, but opts to regulate each lotto applicant by subjecting each of them to public hearing. The Regional Trial Court Presiding Judge Godofredo Sison of Branch 40 has denied the petition of one lotto on-line operator to stop the city mayor of Dumaguete from closing his lotto terminal.
This was learned from Branch 40 sources which stated that Judge Sison’s main contention in denying the lotto operators their request is that the city mayor has already in fact closed the lotto outlet, “so there is nothing to stop in closing because in fact it was already closed,” was the main contention of the Judge. However, the trial on the merits of the preliminary injunctions will continue and as such the act of the mayor in closing the terminal is already beyond the act of the judge since the act has already been done. A petition to re-open the lotto terminal would be another story.
