Traffic nightmare
by Dindo Generoso
Dumaguete traffic is indeed a mess. It has been
like that for many years now and getting
worse everyday. This problem should not
have been hard to see many years ago if our
authorities were diligent enough to have
some foresight.
There is no use blaming the number of vehicles
or motor cabs in particular because that is part of
progress. The real problem is that the city has not
expanded in response to progress. Infrastructure like
streets and new commercial centers are lacking in
the city. These would have decongested the city
poblacion area where the nightmare is.
Our TMO is understaffed and
overworked and the people themselves
are not traffic disciplined.
Many drivers too hardly know traffic
rules and don’t respect traffic
regulations. It is indeed a mess!
The solution to my mind is not decreasing
the number of motor cabs nor
expanding the streets. The solution is
to create more commercial areas, build
more streets in the baranggays to decongest
the city proper. Most importantly
seriously educate the people and drivers
on traffic manners!
I am hoping our city planners read
this article so they can react to it. Do
we have a PLAN to decongest the
city? If so, when is the city government
going to implement the plans?
Have a nice day, everyone!
